Hysterectomy in Adelaide

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the uterus, which is the reproductive organ in females where the foetus develops during pregnancy.

This procedure may be recommended by a doctor in cases where a woman is experiencing certain medical conditions that cannot be effectively treated with other therapies.  Some of the common reasons why a hysterectomy may be necessary include the presence of uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus and can cause pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Other reasons may include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or discomfort, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or uterine prolapse, which is a condition where the uterus drops down into the vaginal canal.

There are different types of hysterectomy procedures that can be performed, depending on the specific condition being treated and the patient's overall health. A total hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus and cervix, while a partial or subtotal hysterectomy involves the removal of only the upper portion of the uterus.

In some cases, the ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed during the procedure, which is called a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.  While a hysterectomy can be a highly effective treatment option for certain medical conditions, it is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the procedure with a healthcare provider before making a decision.

Some women may experience side effects or complications after the surgery, such as vaginal bleeding, infection, or hormonal changes that can lead to menopausal symptoms. In some cases, additional surgeries may be required to address complications or long-term effects of the hysterectomy.
